Empowered Minds Blog/Success and Abundance/Overcome Your Scarcity Thinking

Unfortunately, scarcity and lack seem to be the default setting for everyone on this planet. It’s the conditioning that defines our lives. Even the belief that we’re not good enough or that there’s not enough begins every morning when the alarm clock goes off, and we roll out of bed.

We spend large amounts of time and precious energy complaining about not having enough. There’s not enough time. We don’t get paid enough. Our weeks aren’t long enough. We’re not thin enough, educated enough, or smart enough.

It never occurs to us to question whether these statements are true. This mindset is so ingrained in our subconscious that it shapes our deeper sense of who we are. Being deficient has become the lens through which we experience our lives, and it’s detrimental in many ways.

That’s why we stay in unfulfilling relationships. That’s why we take on jobs we don’t like. It’s why we load our plates two feet high at an all-you-can-eat buffet, even when we’re already full.

The "not enough" mentality drives many people to act in ways they’re not proud of. They compromise their ethics and integrity.

I definitely found this to be true in my early sales career, where the environment was highly competitive and cutthroat. Many salespeople would lie to make a quick sale and impress their managers, thinking they would never be found out. But as usual, the law of karma eventually caught up with them, and they got busted.

The ironic part was that people were so afraid of not making a sale—fearing they would lose their jobs and be frowned upon—that they resorted to deception.

In fact, I actually lost a few sales when I was selling solar because I was ethical and told the truth. On several occasions, competitors swooped in and stole my customers at the last minute. I later found out that these salespeople had been lying and over-promising just to close deals. But, as always, over-promising and under-delivering is a trait that doesn’t last long in the real world.

These salespeople were operating from a mindset of lack, believing there wasn’t enough to go around. They became greedy, people pleasing and eventually, it caught up with them. It always does.

And that brings me to another important point: You don’t have to please everyone on this planet—it’s simply not possible.

As coaching guru Steve Chandler explained:

"To serve and love people, you do not need their prior approval. You do not need to please them or win them over. You do not need to please anyone. That is an absolutely false, toxic, hopeless, dead-end, near-suicidal (business-wise) pursuit. Just love and serve."

The reality is that there is enough for everyone. We live in a massive universe, and if we can just let go of this false idea of scarcity, we can stop playing the lack game.

When the glass is full, stop pouring.

The bottom line is that we have no real conception of the limits we’ve placed on our perceptions. If we truly understood how much we deny the world's abundance, we would be shocked.

Our confusion is so profound that we can’t even conceive of a world without sacrifice. But here’s the truth: the world contains no sacrifice—except the ones we impose upon it.

It’s worth reflecting on just how deluded we have become.
